| Built in 1889-91, Atocha station was the first train station in Madrid. The interior concourse got a facelift in 1992, when the Spanish high-speed AVE trains began service. Travelers may sit and enjoy a water lily pond and tropical gardens. |

Plaza Mayor and Hemingway |

Apartments and offices overlook the restored 17th Century Plaza Mayor (main square). There are outdoor cafes, shops, impromptu Flamenco performances and street artists. We visited the Plaza at night.

Nearby is the Botín Restaurant, which according to the Guinness Book of World Records, is the oldest restaurant in the world - dating from 1725. This was one of Ernest Hemingway's favorite restaurants. The manager gave several of us a tour.
