Plaza de España :: Spanish-American Exhibition of 1929

Plaza de España and Padme?

Plaza de Espana - Seville

Plaza de Espana

Plaza de Espana

If this Plaza looks familiar, then you've seen Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. It's used for a scene on Padme's planet. Pictured here is one in a series of arches with ceramic crests of the provinces of Spain. Built by Anibal González out of brick and ceramics, the Plaza consists of a semicircular structure with a tower at each end and a channel with bridges surrounding its inner circle.

The plaza was extremely busy the day we visited. There had been some kind of military celebration, so there were soldiers, tanks and helicopters. Some of the soldiers were nice enough to pose with our students. There was also a photographer taking photos of professional models. And there were gypsies selling everything from Spanish fans to brightly costumed battery-operated Flamenco dolls.

Exhibition

The Plaza de España sits in the Parque de María Luisa, which was once the private grounds of a palace. This is one of the many exhibition buildings built in and around the park for the Spanish-American exhibition of 1929.
