Toledo

| The streets are so narrow that tour buses have to drop people off outside the walls of the old city. Toledo sits on high ground, so a series of covered escalators (far left) have been built to take people up and into Toledo (you used to have to climb into the city). From the escalator you can see the newer section of Toledo in the distance, with its high rise apartments. |

Walking through the cobblestone streets is like walking back through time. It was an important Roman colony after it was conquered by Romans in 193 BC. Toledo is considered representative of Spanish culture and the whole urban area has been declared a national monument.

Tourism is the most important industry. Swords and engraved metalwork are manufactured. You can get suits of armor and letter openers that look like swords, as well.
